Skyland Resort

Skyland Resort (milepost 42), a large and wide-ranging complex with nearly three dozen structures that range from freestanding rustic cabins constructed in the early 1900s to a modern motel-type building with 20 rooms. Skyland offers a total of 178 rooms, many of which offer excellent views of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The complex has five classes of accommodations, with a wide variation in prices depending on room size, view, and bedding. The lobby of the registration building has a wall of windows offering an outstanding view of the valley. An adjacent building houses a craft and gift shop, taproom, small lounge area, and an attractive dining room.

Skyland resort first called Stony Man Camp, was founded in 1888 by George Freeman Pollock Jr. Pollock was a pioneer conservationist who was later instrumental in establishing Shenandoah National Park. He called the resort Skyland because of its lofty location near the highest point on the Skyline Drive. Pollock chose the perfect spot for his summer retreat away from the heat of Washington, DC. At 3,680 feet – the highest point on Skyline Drive – he had breathtaking views of the Shenandoah Valley and cool mountain breezes. Skyland encompasses 36 acres in the Park with 28 buildings situated on 16 of those acres along the crests and wooded areas.

Today you can still enjoy the amazing views and refreshing mountain breezes, dine on delicious regional fare in the restaurant or at one or more of the Shenandoah Seasonings Culinary events, hike, horseback ride… or simply relax and take in the peaceful surroundings at the Skyland Resort in Shenandoah National Park. The Pollock Dining Room serves breakfast 7:30 to 10:30am, lunch 12 noon to 2:00pm and dinner 5:30 to 9:00pm.

Big Meadows Lodge – Milepost 51

Big Meadows Lodge (milepost 51), which consists of a main lodge plus five cabins and six one- and two-story buildings. Unlike Skyland, Big Meadows is relatively compact, allowing guests an easy walk from any of the rooms to the main lodge where the dining room is located. The least expensive accommodations are 25 relatively small rooms in the main lodge that was constructed in 1939. Most rooms at Big Meadows are in a series of six lodge buildings, two of which (Doubletop and Rapidian) were remodeled in 2007 with new furniture, air conditioning, and simulated wood floors. Rooms in these two buildings each have a private patio or balcony offering good valley views. Ten cabins are in five duplex buildings that sit in a grassy area near the main lodge.

Big Meadows Lodge is named for a large grassy meadow near the lodge where deer often graze.The main lodge was built with stones cut from the Massanutten Mountain in 1939 by the CCC and mountain laborers. The interior structure of the lodge, including the paneling, is made from native chestnut trees, which are now virtually extinct.

The Spottswood Dining Room, New Market Taproom and Craft Shop are located in the main lodge building. The New Market Taproom offers a lighter fare menu plus nightly family-friendly entertainment free to all Park guests. The Spottswood Dining Room serves breakfast 7:30 to 10:00am, lunch noon to 2:00pm, and dinner 5:30 to 9:00pm.

The main lodge has 29 cozy, little rooms and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 28, 1997. The Main Lodge along with five cabins and six multi-unit buildings – located within a short walking distance of the lodge – sit on approximately 10 acres of Park land. There are a variety of lodging options to choose from.

Byrd Visitor Center is located one mile from the lodge and tells the unique story of Shenandoah through exhibits, displays and film.
